Group of Eight (G8) countries
- Group of Eight (G8) countries
An informal grouping of the seven most advanced economies in the world, plus Russia. It is essentially a club for the world’s most powerful countries in economic terms, members being Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. Every year, G8 leaders meet to discuss broad economic and political issues, the stated aims of the organisation being to promote economic growth, reduce global poverty, strengthen good governance, promote peace and security and improve global public health. As the agenda of G8 is usually about controversial global issues, critics often refer to the G8 as an unof- ficial ‘world government’ which has the power to act on areas of worldwide concern. The annual summits are often the focus of anti-globalisation movement protests, notably in Genoa in 2001. Pressure has been placed on G8 leaders to take responsibility to combat problems they are blamed for creating. Bob Geldof organised Live 8 global awareness concerts in 2005 to encourage G8 leaders to ‘Make Poverty History‘ at the Edinburgh summit.
